Odoo Update, Upgrade & LTS: Versions and Security 2026

Last updated: June 14, 2026 · Reading time approx. 9 minutes · Author: Michael Rohrmüller

Odoo is the ERP backbone of many mid-sized companies today – from sales and accounting to inventory and AI-powered workflows. Yet one question determines the long-term security, cost, and future-readiness of your investment: How does Odoo handle updates, upgrades, and the support lifecycle (LTS) – and which deployment option fits your company?

This article explains the Odoo philosophy from a decision-maker's perspective: clearly, with the current versions at a glance, the security aspects, and a straightforward comparison of Odoo Community, Odoo Online, and Odoo.sh. Every fact is backed by the official Odoo documentation.

What is the difference between an update and an upgrade in Odoo?

An update installs the latest revision of the source code for your current Odoo version – for example bug fixes and security patches. It does not change the structure of your database and can be undone by reinstalling the previous revision. An upgrade, by contrast, permanently migrates your database to a newer Odoo release (e.g. from Odoo 18 to Odoo 19). This alters the structure and contents of the database – the operation is irreversible and runs via Odoo's database upgrade service.

In short: an update keeps you secure and stable on the same version. An upgrade moves you to a new version with new features. These definitions come directly from the Odoo documentation on bugfix updates and on upgrades.

Which Odoo version is current (as of June 2026)?

The latest major version is Odoo 19, released on September 18, 2025 at Odoo Experience. The refinement patch Odoo 19.1 followed in January 2026. The three most recent major versions are officially supported: Odoo 17, Odoo 18, and Odoo 19. The next version, Odoo 20, is expected at Odoo Experience 2026 in Brussels (September 24–26, 2026).

Overview: Odoo versions & support status

Version Released Support status (June 2026)
Odoo 19 (current) September 2025 Fully supported – latest version
Odoo 18 October 2024 Fully supported
Odoo 17 November 2023 Supported – oldest version in the support window; support expected to end with the release of Odoo 20
Odoo 16 and older October 2022 and earlier Outside standard support – upgrade recommended

The current official overview is available in the Odoo documentation "Supported versions".

How long is an Odoo version supported? (LTS & support philosophy)

Odoo follows a deliberately simple support policy: the three most recent major versions always receive helpdesk support, bug fixes, and security updates. In practice that means roughly three years of lifecycle per major version, because a new major version appears about once a year and the oldest then drops out of the window.

For companies that want to stay on a version longer, Odoo offers extended support – this is subject to a fee and more limited in scope than standard support. The details are governed by the official page on standard and extended support. Once a version reaches end of life, there are no more security patches, no bug fixes, and no official support – a clear signal to plan an upgrade in good time.

Major vs. minor versions: the release cadence

Major versions (ending in .0, e.g. 18.0, 19.0) are released annually and bring new features and architectural improvements. In addition, Odoo publishes so-called online or SaaS interim versions (e.g. 19.1, 19.2) roughly every two to three months. Important for your platform choice: these rolling interim versions are available exclusively on Odoo Online – Odoo.sh and on-premise receive the annual major versions and therefore prioritize stability.

How secure is Odoo? (Security aspects for decision-makers)

Security is business-critical for an ERP, because it holds financial, customer, and HR data. Odoo relies on a structured, transparent security process:

  • Responsible disclosure & bug bounty: Odoo runs a regulated vulnerability reporting process (aligned with ISO 29147) including a bug-bounty program on HackerOne. Security reports are handled confidentially and with high priority.
  • Continuous security updates: The three supported major versions receive ongoing security patches. Staying on a current version means benefiting automatically – a strong argument for a well-thought-out update/upgrade strategy.
  • Built-in protection mechanisms: Odoo offers two-factor authentication, granular access rights, and SSO integrations (e.g. LDAP, Google, Microsoft Azure).
  • Transparency: The security policy and reporting channels are publicly documented – see odoo.com/security and the SECURITY.md on GitHub.

The key security takeaway for management: the biggest avoidable risk is an outdated, unsupported version. End of life means no more patches. A well-maintained update rhythm and a planned upgrade every few years are therefore not just an IT topic, but active risk management.

Odoo Community, Odoo Online, or Odoo.sh – which option fits you?

Odoo can be run in three ways. The right choice depends on customization needs, IT resources, and data sovereignty.

Odoo Community (open source, self-hosted)

The Community edition is the free, open-source variant of Odoo that you run on your own infrastructure. It offers maximum control and customizability, but requires an experienced IT team for installation, updates, backups, and security. Ideal for companies with special data-sovereignty requirements or deep customization needs. Many business functions (e.g. advanced accounting) require the paid Enterprise edition.

Odoo Online (SaaS)

Odoo Online is the software-as-a-service variant: Odoo handles hosting, maintenance, and – most relevant – upgrades automatically. You pay a user-based subscription and don't have to worry about server configuration. The trade-off: limited customizability, as no custom code is possible. In return, you are the only ones who receive the rolling interim versions with the newest features. Ideal for companies that want to start quickly, with low maintenance and "worry-free."

Odoo.sh (PaaS)

Odoo.sh is the platform-as-a-service solution and sits exactly between Online and on-premise: an Odoo-managed cloud operation that still allows custom modules and custom code – with Git integration and separate development, staging, and production environments. That makes Odoo.sh the preferred choice for companies that need individual customizations but don't want to operate the infrastructure themselves.

Quick comparison

Criterion Odoo Community Odoo Online (SaaS) Odoo.sh (PaaS)
Operation/hosting Self-hosted Managed by Odoo Managed by Odoo
Custom code Fully possible Not possible Possible (Git)
Updates/upgrades Your responsibility Automatic by Odoo Managed, with control
Interim versions No (annual major) Yes (rolling) No (annual major)
IT effort High Very low Medium
Ideal for Data sovereignty, deep customization Fast, low-maintenance start Customization without self-operation

A detailed comparison is also provided in the Odoo deployment documentation.

Our recommendation: treat your update/upgrade strategy as a business decision

For decision-makers, the core message is: don't treat updates and upgrades as a pure IT task, but as part of your risk and investment planning. Three guidelines:

  1. Stay within the support window. Plan an upgrade before your version drops out of the "top 3" – this avoids security gaps and expensive extended support.
  2. Choose your platform deliberately. If you don't need deep customization, Odoo Online is lower-maintenance. If you need custom code, Odoo.sh is usually a better fit than complex self-hosting.
  3. Test your upgrades. Use staging environments (Odoo.sh) or the official upgrade service to verify upgrades before going live in production.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is the current Odoo version in 2026?

The current major version is Odoo 19 (released September 2025, patch 19.1 in January 2026). Odoo 17, 18, and 19 are officially supported.

How long is an Odoo version supported?

Odoo supports the three most recent major versions – roughly three years per version. After that, an upgrade or paid extended support is required.

What is the difference between update and upgrade?

An update installs the latest code revision of the same version (e.g. security patches) without changing the database. An upgrade permanently migrates the database to a new version – and this step is irreversible.

Do I get security updates automatically?

On Odoo Online and Odoo.sh, security updates are applied in a managed way. With Community/on-premise you are responsible yourself – a reason to rely on professional support here.

Which Odoo option is right for my company?

Odoo Online for a low-maintenance start without custom code, Odoo.sh for custom development without running your own servers, Community/on-premise for maximum control and data sovereignty.
