Odoo is today the ERP backbone of many mid-sized companies – from sales and accounting to inventory and AI-supported workflows. But one question decides in the long term about the security, costs and future viability of your investment: How does Odoo handle updates, upgrades and the support lifecycle (LTS) – and which operating mode suits your company?

This article explains the Odoo philosophy from the perspective of decision-makers: understandable, with the current versions at a glance, the security aspects and a clear comparison of Odoo Community, Odoo Online and Odoo.sh. All facts are backed by the official Odoo documentation.

What is the difference between an update and an upgrade in Odoo?

An update installs the latest revision of the source code of your current Odoo version – such as bug fixes and security patches. It does not change the structure of your database and can be undone by restoring the previous revision. An upgrade, on the other hand, permanently transfers your database to a new Odoo release (e.g. from Odoo 18 to Odoo 19). In the process, the structure and contents of the database are adapted – this process is not reversible and runs via the Odoo database upgrade service.

In short: The update keeps you safe and stable on the same version. The upgrade brings you to a new version with new features. These definitions come directly from the Odoo documentation on bugfix updates and on the upgrade.

Which Odoo version is current (as of June 2026)?

The currently newest major version is Odoo 19, released on 18 September 2025 at the Odoo Experience. The refinement patch Odoo 19.1 followed in January 2026. Currently officially supported are the three most recent major versions: Odoo 17, Odoo 18 and Odoo 19. The next version, Odoo 20, is expected at the Odoo Experience 2026 in Brussels (24–26 September 2026).

How long is an Odoo version supported? (LTS & support philosophy)

Odoo pursues a deliberately simple support policy: the three most recent major versions are always provided with helpdesk support, bug fixes and security updates. In practice, this means about three years of lifecycle per major version, since a new major version appears roughly every year and the oldest thus falls out of the window.

For companies that want to stay longer on a version, Odoo offers Extended Support – this is chargeable and limited in scope compared to standard support. When a version reaches end of life („End of Life“), there are no more security patches, no bug fixes and no more official support – a clear signal to plan an upgrade in time.

Major vs. minor versions: the release cadence

Major versions (with the ending .0, e.g. 18.0, 19.0) appear annually and bring new features and architecture improvements. In addition, Odoo publishes so-called online or SaaS intermediate versions (e.g. 19.1, 19.2) at a rhythm of about two to three months. Important for the platform choice: These rolling intermediate versions are available exclusively on Odoo Online – Odoo.sh and on-premise receive the annual major versions and thus rely more strongly on stability.

How secure is Odoo? (Security aspects for decision-makers)

Security is business-critical for an ERP, because this is where financial, customer and personnel data reside. Odoo relies on a structured, transparent security process:

  • Responsible disclosure & bug bounty: Odoo operates a regulated reporting process for vulnerabilities (based on ISO 29147) including a bug bounty program on HackerOne. Security reports are handled confidentially and with high priority.
  • Continuous security updates: The three supported major versions continuously receive security patches. Those who stay on a current version automatically benefit from this – a strong argument for a well-thought-out update/upgrade strategy.
  • Built-in protection mechanisms: Odoo offers, among other things, two-factor authentication, granular access rights and SSO connections (e.g. LDAP, Google, Microsoft Azure).

The most important security insight for management: The greatest avoidable risk is an outdated, no-longer-supported version. End-of-life means: no more patches. A maintained update rhythm and a plannable upgrade every few years are therefore not just an IT topic, but active risk management.

Odoo Community, Odoo Online or Odoo.sh – which variant suits us?

Odoo can be operated in three ways. The right choice depends on customization needs, IT resources and data sovereignty.

Odoo Community (open source, self-hosted)

The Community edition is the free, open-source variant of Odoo that you operate on your own infrastructure. It offers maximum control and customizability but requires an experienced IT team for installation, updates, backups and security. Ideal for companies with special requirements for data sovereignty or deep customization. For many business functions (e.g. advanced accounting), the chargeable Enterprise edition is necessary.

Odoo Online (SaaS)

Odoo Online is the software-as-a-service variant: Odoo takes over hosting, maintenance and – particularly relevant – the upgrades automatically. You pay a user-based subscription and don't have to worry about any server configuration. The price for this: limited customizability, since no custom code of your own is possible. In return, you are the only ones to receive the rolling intermediate versions with the newest features. Ideal for companies that want to start quickly, with low maintenance and „carefree“.

Odoo.sh (PaaS)

Odoo.sh is the platform-as-a-service solution and lies exactly between Online and on-premise: an Odoo-managed cloud operation that nevertheless allows custom modules and custom code – with Git integration as well as separate development, staging and production environments. This makes Odoo.sh the preferred choice for companies that need individual customizations but do not want to operate the infrastructure themselves.

For decision-makers, the core message is: Do not treat updates and upgrades as a pure IT task, but as part of your risk and investment planning. Three guidelines:

  1. Stay within the support window. Plan an upgrade before your version falls out of the „top 3“ – this way you avoid security gaps and expensive Extended Support.
  2. Choose the platform deliberately. Those who don't need deep customizations run with lower maintenance on Odoo Online. Those who need custom code are usually better off with Odoo.sh than with elaborate self-hosting.
  3. Test upgrades. Use staging environments (Odoo.sh) or the official upgrade service to verify upgrades before going into production.
